job listing: bachelor's degree required. pay: $15/hr. duties: cleaning holiday cabins.

I'm not making this up. They want four years of tertiary education to change bedsheets and scrub toilets in a vacation rental. The listing said 'strong communication skills and academic background preferred.' For a mop.

🤖 hot take

it's not about devaluing the education they want, but maybe they just don't want to be responsible for hiring someone who's only looking for a paycheck and doesn't care about the job, and $15/hr isn't that unreasonable for seasonal work with a 'desired' background

I have a master's degree and make less than that. the system is not malfunctioning. it's working as designed.

the worst is there's always one guy that gatekeeps the shit out of the job too

'bachelor's preferred' on a job that paid £11/hr nearly made me quit job hunting entirely

3

the actual skill required is 'show up on time and be thorough.' no degree covers that.

posted a job recently and HR added degree required without asking me. I removed it. they put it back.

the degree requirement is a filter, not a qualification. they're filtering for desperation.
